Overview

Discover the South Island of New Zealand on the 11 day Takahe journey with Stray Travel, a trip that blends bucket-list scenery, authentic experiences, and the freedom to explore at your own pace. Starting and ending in Christchurch, you will travel through the highlights of the island, including the golden beaches and native forest of Abel Tasman, the rugged coastline and pancake-shaped rock formations in Punakaiki, the glacier-carved valleys of Franz Josef, the adventure-filled atmosphere of Queenstown, and the peaceful alpine beauty of Aoraki Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo with its clear night skies.

You will travel in a comfortable air-conditioned coach and stay mostly in twin or double rooms in 3- to 4-star hotels and scenic lodges, with a mix of continental and cooked breakfasts and a few included dinners. Each destination offers chances to hike, relax by the lake, taste local wine, watch glaciers up close, or join optional activities such as a Milford Sound cruise or a nature walk in Abel Tasman.

Led by friendly local guides who know the area well, you will explore in a small group environment that feels welcoming and relaxed. The tour offers the perfect balance of structure and flexibility, giving you memorable landscapes, unique cultural moments, and enough free time to shape the trip to your interests.

If you want a comfortable, uplifting, and inspiring way to see the South Island, the Takahe tour is a great choice for travelers who want more than a basic sightseeing trip and prefer a warm and personal style of travel.
